Reimagining education

In “the new normal”, we need to take a hard look at our priorities as a country.  More than anything, it seems obvious our population is calling for systemic change.  For starters – let’s reimagine education.

Education is the most important building block of society, preparing children for careers, but more importantly, life. After the last 3 months at home, with the varied quality of K-12 education and college curriculum delivery, are you happy with the state of education?  Of the support we give teachers?  Of the challenge they deal with in the classrooms every day?

I believe strongly in public education as the best path forward for society to enable kids to live out their own American Dream.  But in the “new normal”, has education been on autopilot?  Can we utilize technology to connect urban and rural, White, Hispanic and Black students together even when they may live in different parts of the city or country?  Can we challenge our children to think for themselves, challenge the narrative and expect teachers to both have authority to teach but be held accountable for the results (real results, not test results).

Part of what is tearing the nation apart through the lens of the George Floyd travesty is the divergence of opportunities afforded and what the system has done to level the playing field.   And in everything we do, we should strive for a level field   Equality.  Nothing more.  Nothing less.   And that is what we should be talking about, instead of Covid.  It’s time to move forward.
