The Strangely Unscientific Masking of America

Source: American Institute for Economic Research By Jenin Younes November 27, 2020 I remember vividly the day, at the tail end of March, when facemasks suddenly became synonymous with morality: either one cared about the lives of others and donned a mask, or one was selfish and refused to do so. The shift occurred virtually overnight. Only a day or two before, I had associated this attire solely with surgeons and people living in heavily polluted regions. Now, my friends’ favorite pastime during our weekly Zoom...

We’re back, baby!!!! Oil Prices gonna oil price

"The market can stay irrational for longer than you can stay solvent."  In the continuation of the strangest year on record, the blue wave (bullish, stimulus) that gave way to the red hold (bullish, no tax increases) and ultimately came out as the gridlock (bullish, nothing can happen), and so in the spirit of productivity, we heard that all this was bringing McConnell et al back to the table to negotiate stimulus (bullish, rumor) and with a vaccine (bullish,...

Kids

It wasn't my intention to write today.  As Thanksgiving approaches and as part of simplifying life, I have deleted most of the apps on my phone, the bookmarks in my browser and have made the conscious choice not to check the news or social media for... a while.  Like eating better and not drinking, this will no doubt ebb with time but for me (personal accountability), neither the news cycle, the media mania, nor the echo chamber that is...

Personal Accountability

It was Sunday afternoon.  The sky was overcast, the wind was calm, and I was looking at the pattern and majesty of the rippling clouds in the sky.  Exhausted, I sat down to check Twitter for the umpteenth time, curious what the stock futures would hold for Monday morning and what other random news and thoughts were filling the virtual world of the cloud. Drenched in sweat, legs aching and lungs burning, I had just finished playing a competitive racket...

#hottakeoftheday podcast Episode 84 w/Ivor Cummins

In September, we posted a video on #hottakeoftheday site here from Ivor Cummins, the Fat Emperor.  In it, he broke down data.  I love data.  As the author of “Eat Rich, Live Long”, identifying trends in food and health led him to pioneer a lifestyle way of eating. When COVID came, he did what he did best. Look at data and analyze. He’s been featured all over the world, on television and radio across the U.K. and this week he...

Revisiting the DUC dilemma

When it comes to data in oil and gas, one of the most hotly contested is the EIA's DUC count (that is to say "Drilled, but uncompleted wells").  Who's excited?  Controversy over data... we haven't had a chat on that in a long time! The key challenge to the EIA data is that there isn't a great way to make a choice on when to stop considering a drilled well a DUC, and instead consider it a P&A liability.  So...
