Time to open the economy

The long awaited Executive Orders on coronavirus stimulus came yesterday and all I can do is sit on the porch, drink coffee and scratch my head asking “how did we get here?”

We go out to restaurants a lot. My assessment: they aren’t full because many people have changed their habits, not because of capacity restrictions. Why are we prolonging the inevitable? Many hospitality jobs are permanently lost. Why are we pretending?

I have heard from pharmaceutical salespeople who say they aren’t allowed to visit doctors in their offices and yet the drugs they sell are still being bought. Doesn’t this make one question “Am I really required if the drugs sell themselves?”

I have heard from people who work from home and say how great it is but also say “No one is buying anything because they are uncertain about their business..” so working from home works… because there is very limited work to do (ask anyone in oil and gas how easy it is to run a business with 80% less activity and 25% less people).

Evictions have to happen if people don’t have jobs. Payroll taxes are 0 without jobs. Student debt is worthless without jobs.

The point? The only Executive Order that fixes the problem is the one that opens the economy to see what actual damage we have caused.
