Don’t widen the education gap

It turns out that some people are just better than others. Better looking, more athletic, more charming, a better leader, smarter. It’s no fault of the person, it’s the fault of their parents who didn’t do a very good job of mating.

In the nature versus nurture context, there are levers that can be pulled. Work ethic. Access to health care, education, role models, scholarships, internships, travel. But the key is that all these things have to be done while the child is young to overcome some of the deficiencies.

Me? I have the face for radio, the EQ of a hungry bear, but did ok in the smarts and athletics department. I had the opportunity at school to be in the International Bachelorette program, play squash at a level high enough to play two world championships and get recruited to a number of Ivy League schools. My parents mentored me, encouraging me to go into engineering and I got an internship at a company where I was able to work on projects that no one else did that made it easier to get a job. Then I worked my ass off.

But the basis of all of it was opportunity and education. So closing schools to flatten the curve is actually widening gap.

So that means we are back to the choices of parents. Genetics and wealth. Not good for the future.
