Distribution is power

I remember when I first heard the term ‘fake news’ and I thought it was ridiculous. It was weaponized – like ‘conspiracy theorist’ or ‘white supremacists’’ – and used to discredit something someone didn’t like. It was childish but it wasn’t wrong. The nuanced way to say it is “You’re just pushing your narrative.” Always.

News is a business and it has to compete with social media. Social media is an echo chamber because we don’t generally like to read things that take a position different from our own. So news has become propaganda. Sure, there are great reporters and thinkers in the industry. But distribution is power, and (s)he with the distribution dominates the message.

Where was the debate about South Dakota’s CV response vs. California? Where was the holding accountable for when the Surgeon General said masks don’t work? Cuomo said “any loss of life is too much in 2020” and now says “if we don’t reopen, there will be nothing left to reopen.” Too hot? Climate change. Too cold? Same thing. Debate has died. Narrative reins.

This week in Texas, the cold was the cause of an increase in power demand and the grid couldn’t take it. Full stop. We relied heavily on sources to make up the gap. Here is how they performed:
