Spring ahead

Other than losing an hour of sleep this morning, does daylight savings time actually have any impact on energy consumption? The bulk of research suggests that its impact is minimal at best and at least one study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2008 suggested heart attacks increased by 5% in the week following because of disruptions in sleep patterns.   Let’s split the baby- move time forward 30 minutes and leave it there forever!   Except in Newfoundland ... where they are already 30...

Living within cash flow is hard

Energy stocks were crushed again this week, saving the best beating for Friday.  Why?  Because the game has changed and very few appear to have noticed (Chevron and Exxon are two notable exceptions).   The tech crash of 2000 and financial crash of 2008 left energy as a standout place to put money as oil resource plays boomed: Bakken-2009, Eagleford-2011, Permian-2016. Couple that with rising oil prices through 2014 and “the race for inventory and growth” was on and access to capital was plentiful. That was THEN.  Yet...
